Tyrannosaur

The fossils are buried deep
below the worms
and the moist dirt of life
the fossils prop up the foundations of
our house
all teeth and claws and
jutting clues of a violence
half remembered

The fossils chatter with each step
you take
they bark like dogs as they
clatter together like
bamboo pipes
we dance on the dead
and make raucous
promises that the bones shall always keep

The fossils break when you say you’re sorry
they crumble into
the salted Earth
as though relieved of a duty
held for millennia
under my shirt you can see my bones too
and they chatter when I laugh
or when I cry
